Art for Teens

ICE teenI recently visited the Institute of Contemporary Art here in Boston. Hidden along the waterfront area, I was able to discover all of the great things the ICA has to offer inside and outside the building. Right now they’re showcasing a collection by Jim Hodges: Give More Than You Take. The collection illustrates his career dating back to his work from 1987. I found his work compelling, which got me thinking about what was going on in his mind while creating his art. Hodges work reflects many themes such as time, loss, identity, and love. The other galleries feature 20+ artists and selections from private galleries. What I also discovered during my time exploring the ICA was how teen-involved it is.

The ICA has opportunities for all different age groups but the programs they offer to teens are the ones that should be talked about. “ICA Teens” offers free workshops ranging from Digital Photography to DJing. The way to get involved in these workshops is to go on their teen site and click the “Workshop” tab and then fill out the information form. I think it’s a great resource for teens in the community who are interested in the arts and media but don’t know where to begin. It’s also FREE!

Another great contribution to teens that the ICA offers is the Teen Arts Council. I liked it because its core foundation is similar to The Center for Young Women’s Health. They advocate for young people to be aware of art and participate and empower other youth to be just as involved in art as they are (just as we are with young people’s health). You can find more information on how to be a part of the Teen Arts Council through their website.

Throughout the year they meet with several professional artists, take on many projects, and organize events for teens such as a very popular event called Teen Night where fellow teens present their art from spoken word to paint- it’s all there. During the school year admission to the ICA is free for students. If you or someone you know wants to get involved in the arts, check out the ICA you won’t be disappointed.
