Maria Talks and We Like It!
Recently I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about the website mariatalks. It’s a website for teens that discusses sex, birth control, and other related topics. Some people have said that the language used on the site isn’t exactly teen-friendly, and some of the content (such as talk about abortion) is not appropriate. I decided to take a look at the website just to get an idea of what all the media buzz was about. After navigating the site, I found the information really useful and couldn’t understand why some people would object to this resource.
Personally, I believe that it’s imperative that teens have a place to go to get information about sex, pregnancy and STD prevention, and other topics that are written in teen-friendly language, so that we can make healthy decisions. The topics that are discussed on mariatalks are very sensitive topics for teens, but they are written about in a manner in which teens can understand them. Some teens may feel awkward or embarrassed to seek information about sex and birth control, but they can find answers to most of their questions here. I would think that this resource is very effective especially since teens can access it without others knowing they are seeking such information.
I think that some people say that this website has inappropriate information because they don’t agree with the fact that teens are sexually active. The reality is that some teens do have sex and it’s important for them to be aware of their options and have somewhere to go to get simple and reliable information. In addition to mariatalks, our websites youngwomenshealth.org and youngmenshealthsite.org are great resources for teens, their parents, educators, and health care providers.
