Why Greek Yogurt?

Eating Greek YogurtGreek yogurt has been popping up at grocery stores around the US. You may have noticed that more and more yogurt brands are coming out with their own version. So, what’s the story behind the Greek yogurt trend?

Actually, strained yogurt, commonly called Greek yogurt, is nothing new. It has been used in Eastern Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian cooking for years. It’s made by straining out some of the whey (the liquid part) from regular yogurt. Straining the yogurt leaves it smooth and thick, with a slightly sour taste.

Greek yogurt has gained popularity because of its nutritional content. It’s an excellent source of calcium, protein, and probiotics (healthy gut bacteria that are thought to improve health). In fact, Greek yogurt can contain up to 3 times more protein than regular yogurt, depending on the brand. There are also a large variety of flavors to taste. So, the next time you’re looking for a snack or a great addition to your breakfast or lunch, try some Greek yogurt.

For example: Add Greek yogurt to your baked potato instead of sour cream, or mix it with granola for a power-packed protein snack. You might find a delicious new treat. My favorites happen to be the 0% fat version with honey on the side mixed with whole grain cereal, and the 2% fat version with pineapple all by itself!
