Dealing With Parents Who Have Different Political Opinions
In the present political climate, it can be hard to avoid discussing the latest scandal. If your political leanings differ from your parents’, it can make for awkward conversation at the dinner table, especially when it comes to hot-button topics such as gender, sexuality, and political correctness. Try to remember that you do not have to agree with everyone. It may be frustrating to hear that your parents have vastly differing opinions from your own, so take this as an opportunity not to shut yourself off, but instead to help them understand the topic from your own perspective. Generational divides can be hard to overcome, especially when they pertain to particularly controversial areas. Listen and try to understand their beliefs while helping them understand yours. You may not end in agreement, but you will better understand the disagreement.
If there is an issue you are particularly passionate about, you may find yourself becoming very angry when people do not agree with or understand your view. Consider turning your anger into motivation by getting involved in a charity or organization that works to bring awareness to whatever the issue may be. You can use your frustration to help more people understand the issue, and by doing so you will be making a difference in a way that makes you proud.
Whether your parents disagree with your political leanings in every way or only on certain topics, it can be hard to understand why they feel the way they do. Instead of shutting yourself off, listen, learn, and use the new knowledge to make a difference in whatever way you can. You may not change their opinion, but you can at least try to find peace at the dinner table.
