Martha Elliot Health Fair ’09
On Saturday October 19th, Erica, Emily, Dennisse and I had the pleasure of hosting a resource table at the Martha Elliot Health Fair. Most of us were less than excited about waking up early on a beautiful Saturday morning to go to work. We were not sure if anyone would show up, and we wondering if it was going to be organized. However, as soon as we got to the Martha Elliot Health Center, our pre-conceived notions were quickly dismissed. As we arrived the music was blasting, friendly people were setting up what turned out to be a well organized event, and prizes were already being offered. We quickly set up our station and prepared ourselves for a crowd that was gathering at the entrance. Many people who visited our table were pleasantly surprised that a Center like ours existed in Boston! We shared information about nutrition, how to prevent STD’s, safety in relationships, and more. We also gave out bookmarks and pencils. I even got the chance to practice my Spanish.
Now don’t get me wrong, we weren’t sitting at our table the whole time waiting for people to come to us. We took the initiative to go to different tables, introduce ourselves and get health information from other people from different agencies in Boston. I had a great time raising awareness about the Center for Young Women’s Health, learning about many other resources in Boston, and of course dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Beat it”. Thanks to what I have learned while working at the CYWH, I won the STD trivia game. As if the day couldn’t get any better, (drum roll please) we met Pebbles from Jam’n 94.5! The CYWH youth advisors had a wonderful day. We almost didn’t want it to end =)
