Googly-Eyed for Gaga

Lady GagaHey it’s Emily!

I’m sure many of you have already heard about the controversy surrounding Lady Gaga’s doll-eyed look in her music video Bad Romance. Her eye popping look was originally believed to be the result of risky circle lenses that are illegal in the United States. Even though The New York Times reported that Gaga’s eye popping appearance was created by a computer, the American Optometric Association is still concerned about the message her image is sending to adolescents.

Circle Lenses (which were first believed to be the lenses Gaga was wearing) make eyes look larger by covering more of the white of the eye. They are illegal in the United States due to their high risk of infection and the subsequent loss of vision with complications. They are often sold through internet based retailers targeting teens. Circle lenses appeal to teens due to their ability to create a doll eyed look similar to the cartoon characters of anime. It’s important to keep in mind that our eyes are very sensitive and need to be cared for, and wearing lenses of any kind without a prescription from an Opthamologist is extremely dangerous. So, next time you want to get that eye popping look (if you must) try a little mascara or eye shadow. It should do the trick and it will save your eyes.
