The Coconut Water Debate
Coconut water seems to be all the rage among professional athletes, but what is it about this slightly sour drink that is getting everyone’s attention? This tropical treat is now available at many stores and has been praised for being natural, plant based (meaning no cholesterol or saturated animal fat), low in calories, and an electrolyte powerhouse (with 15 times the amount of potassium as the average sports drink). Since coconut water is also about 95% water; it’s also being marketed as great for rehydration, but is coconut water really a natural miracle drink?
Keep in mind that while coconut water may have a lot going for it, it may not be the best choice for many teens. For serious athletes, coconut water may not cut it for intense workout sessions, since it’s low in protein and carbohydrates, which are essential for post-workout recovery. For non-athletes, water is still the healthiest choice. Furthermore, while it may seem light and refreshing, at approximately $2 a bottle, the cost can add up fast.
Overall, coconut water has a good reputation based on many benefits and can be a tasty end to your workout session. However, if you’re a serious athlete, there are better ways to fuel your workouts. To help your muscles recover, add in a protein source such as half a handful of nuts following intense exercise (>60 minutes). If you’re broke like I am, try my favorite snack; water and a roll up of banana, peanut butter, and bread; and that’s a wrap for me.
