No Body Shame
What began as a series of YouTube videos called “A Fat Girl Dancing” has now exploded into an international movement that has raised awareness about the many misconceptions surrounding weight and the devastating effects of body shame. This sensational campaign was started by a twenty something woman (Whitney Thore) and her co-workers who believed that she could promote the idea of self-love and acceptance. However, this movement isn’t just another story about loving your body; it’s endorsed by a woman who just happens to have PCOS. Similar to many other women diagnosed with PCOS, Whitney’s self-esteem fluctuated with the numbers on the scale. Lack of confidence and self-doubt ultimately threatened her goals and dreams.
Unfortunately girls and women with PCOS report significant distress and sometimes serious depression surrounding body image, which may be related to not only weight, but acne, and unwanted hair too. Needless to say, PCOS can have a profound impact on a person’s quality of life. However, with treatment, support, and determination to overcome societal norms and notions of the fashion industry, symptoms can be managed and you can have a fulfilling life.
I give Whitney a lot of credit for stepping out of her comfort zone to connect with others who are impacted by the troubling effects of body shame. She is brave and determined to help others while promoting the idea of self-love and acceptance as a step toward total wellness. For more information, check out Whitney’s “No Body Shame” website.
