The days leading up to the prom are usually filled with anticipation and excitement. There’s the shopping for the perfect dress, shoes, and accessories, and getting hair and nails done. There are also other important details, such as figuring out how to get to and from the prom and after parties safely. Here are some important tips so that you will have fun and stay safe on the night of your prom.

Plan on talking with your parent(s) or guardian(s) about the schedule and rules, and plan to check in with them by phone at some point during the evening or if there is any change in your plans. You know they’ll want to set ground rules so agreeing ahead of time about a curfew, etc. will take away some stress on the night of your prom.

Say no to alcohol and drugs. Underage drinking and drug possession is not only illegal but getting caught has serious consequences.

Arrange safe transportation. Be sure you have a plan to get to and from the prom safely, whether it’s by limo, a cab, a parent, or other responsible and sober driver.

Be aware of peer pressure. Prom night can be viewed as a night without boundaries, and can lead to poor decisions with life-changing results. Don’t let your guard down just because it’s prom night. If you believe your friends are doing something wrong or they are pressuring you to do something you aren’t comfortable with, stand up for yourself and what you believe is right.

Don’t feel pressured to have sex on prom night. Having sex is a serious decision that should be made only after you have given it a lot of thought, considered your family values, and you and your partner have talked and agreed to use protection to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Charge your cell phone before you leave for the prom. It’s a good idea to have a completely charged phone so you can check in with your parents or friends, or in the case of an emergency. Put ICE (in case of emergency) in your cell phone next to the name and number of the person that should be contacted in case of an emergency. It’s also a good idea to enter the phone number of your local police.

Follow your school’s prom rules. Every high school has specific prom rules. If you don’t follow them, you run the risk of being sent home, or worse, being expelled from school. It’s just not worth it.
