Let Her Eat Shake!
When Michelle Obama ordered a burger, shake, fries, and a Diet Coke recently, almost every newspaper, website, and news station had something to say about it. Although some people criticized her for indulging in a 1,700 calorie meal saying that it went against the message she’s trying to send in her fight against obesity, I think this meal actually made Michelle Obama an even better health advocate to Americans.
Yes, it’s true that meals like these are a huge cause of the obesity problem in America, but only because people are eating meals like this everyday and aren’t getting the exercise they need. Michelle Obama, however, is at a healthy weight, exercises regularly, and follows a balanced diet. This meal was just a special treat, not something she eats everyday.
What some people don’t understand about eating healthy is that “unhealthy” foods such as fries or a shake don’t have to be entirely off limits. In fact, many nutritionists came to Michelle Obama’s defense saying that occasional indulgences such as this are completely fine.
Healthy eating is about finding a balance between what’s healthy and what you enjoy; not being perfect. Listen to the message the First Lady is sending. You should never feel guilty for enjoying foods you love every once in a while.
